On Friday 5 May, the Australian Government announced the crucial extension of the Medicare Heart Health Check for another two years, ensuring millions of Australians can continue to access preventative measures to reduce their risk of heart attack or stroke.
We extend our gratitude to the Heart Foundation's dedicated partners and supporters, who worked tirelessly to advocate for this life-saving initiative. Your efforts have helped improve the heart health of many Australians and we are grateful for your unwavering commitment to this cause.

About Heart Health Checks
Heart disease remains the nation’s leading cause of death, tragically taking the life of one Australian every 30 minutes.
The Heart Health Check, a 20-minute check-up with your GP, is currently the only available Medicare item dedicated to the early detection and prevention of heart disease in Australia.
Heart Health Checks help us prevent heart disease before it strikes through the early screening and management of risk factors by your GP. Nearly 440,000 Australians have seen their GP for a Medicare subsidised Heart Health Check since they were introduced.

The Medicare subsidy supporting this check is due to expire on 30 June 2023 and we are concerned the Federal Government will not extend this item.

Over a five-year period, Heart Health Checks could help prevent over 67,000 heart attacks, strokes, and heart disease related deaths in high-risk Australians.
Removing the Heart Health Check Medicare item will have a devastating impact, resulting in tens of thousands of preventable heart events occurring and a debilitating effect on the health system, all Australians, and their families.
Join us in the fight for Australian hearts and help save the Medicare Heart Health Check.
