Nearly four years after suffering a heart attack that almost killed him, Cameron still struggles to believe the events of that day.

Cam, then a fit-and-healthy 31-year-old, had just returned from working a night shift at the Bega cheese factory. One minute he was in bed reading, and the next minute, everything went blank.

Cam was rushed to the local hospital ahead of a helicopter flight to Canberra. In hospital, Cam fought for his life. He was in an induced coma, fighting complications including pneumonia. At one point his kidneys were shutting down. Cam and his wife, Carly would later learn that his heart attack was caused by a "big daddy" calcium deposit at a main arterial branch. Thanks to research of the past and the medical skill of today’s surgeons, his artery was fixed with a single stent.

During his recovery, he reached out to the Heart Foundation for information and support. He says he is incredibly grateful to have connected with the Foundation’s Young Hearts program for younger people recovering from heart attack or living with heart disease.

He has also become a passionate advocate for raising awareness of, and funds for, the Heart Foundation.

When asked why he would encourage people to donate to the Heart Foundation, he doesn’t miss a beat. “This (a heart attack) could happen to anyone at any age. I say to people, have a look around you. The donation you give today could really help save the life of someone you love. It’s that simple.
